Cleaning and Servicing an Electric Rotary Lawnmower

Like most things, your lawnmower will work more effectively and break down less if it's looked after. In this article we suggest ways to increase the life span of your mower and to get better grass cutting results.

    Electric Hover Mower

Rotary mowers either have a plastic or metal body, and with regular use the finish of the surface around the blade becomes matted. This gives grass and debris a roughened surface to attach to, meaning that deposits can build up quickly after cleaning.

To slow the build-up, clean regularly with a car wash detergent and apply a little polish that will allow dirt to slip off rather than stick.

Remove the mower blade and fan (if fitted) to gain access to the blade spindle, where you should clean and remove debris and apply a little oil to the shaft. Also examine the mower blade, and sharpen and balance or replace it as necessary.

NB: Make sure you wear protective gloves when removing the blade.

Clean off debris and grass mulch with a dustpan brush or plastic-bladed ice scraper and use a clean paint brush to clear air ventilation gauzes.

Wipe down the body, and when it's clean apply a little car polish to the area around the blade.

Reassemble and check that the switches and wiring are undamaged and working correctly.

Your lawnmower should now be prepared for the rest of the season, but don't forget to clean it and monitor the blade wear periodically.
