    January and February:

The lawn must be kept clear of fallen leaves and children's toys. If areas are thinning then re-seed providing the ground is not frozen solid. Prepare these areas now by digging over the area and removing large stones, weeds and debris, and mixing in compost if required.

Try to avoid walking on the lawn when waterlogged or if it is frozen. While opportunities to work in the garden are limited, you can still service mowers and strimmers, sharpen the blades and tools, and clean and protect metal surfaces from corrosion.

    March:

If the ground is dry and not frozen then it may be time for the first cut. Set the mower blades for a high cut, so you only trim the top of the grass. Use a garden fork to spike the lawn to a depth of 10cm, then brush in a mixture of sand and compost to help aerate the soil.

It's very important to not mow the lawn when it is wet, as this can encourage fungus to grow as well as resulting in an uneven cut.

    April:

Start to regularly mow to keep the grass trim and even. Don't cut the grass lower than 2-3cm from the ground, taking a maximum of one third of the total length of the grass with each cut. This is also the time to sow the grass seed into the areas that need re-seeding. Tread areas you prepared previously, level them out and rake to a fine tilth.

Sow with grass seed and cover lightly with dry soil, gently firming down the surface, before ensuring the area is well watered.

    May:

Regular mowing will promote dense growth, while a lawn feed will encourage new lawn growth. In addition, use a weed product to control weeds and moss, but do not apply weed killer to grass that is less than six months old.

In areas that have been reseeded, give the first cut when seedling shoots are 5-7 cm high, raising your lawnmower blades as high as they will go to just trim the top of new growth. Make sure the mower blade is sharp otherwise the young seedlings will be pulled from the soil.

    June and July:

Mow regularly, but in long periods of hot and dry weather mow less frequently and raise the blades for a higher cut, as less moisture will be lost this way. Water the grass thoroughly during dry spells using a sprinkler and spot treat stubborn weeds with weed killer.

To remove moss and thatch build-up scarify the lawn with a lawnrake, this will help to reduce or prevent the appearance of brown patches.

    August:

Continue to mow and scarify the lawn. Reseed high wear areas if required, preparing these areas using the same process as that in March and April.

    September:

Continue mowing, and progressively raise the mower blades to leave a longer cut. Scarify and re-seed areas that require it.

    October:

Subject to the weather, continue mowing. For the final cut of the year simply top the grass and do the same for the grass seedlings. Aerate the soil by spiking and composting, and apply an autumn lawn feed. Weed where necessary.

    November:

If the weather has been warm, one more cut may be necessary. Keep the lawn free of fallen leaves.

    December:

Keep the lawn clear of any fallen leaves.
