How to Diagnose No Heat in My Washing Machine

If a washing machine is not heating the wash cycle will usually continue forever as it waits for the water to heat up. To confirm this select the hottest cycle when empty and see if heat can be felt after 30-40 minutes. If no heat is identified check the element and thermostat with a meter.

How to Confirm a Faulty Water Heating Circuit.

    Water Heating Elements:

To check a heating element remove the connections and measure its resistance, this should be between 25 and 30 ohms.

    Thermostats:

Older washing machines usually have bimetal thermostatic switches. These remain closed (less than .1ohm resistance) until the cut out temperature is reached.

Most modern machines have a thermistor which will give a variable resistance depending on the temperature. This will vary from twenty thousand ohms at twenty degrees centigrade to thirteen hundred ohms at ninety five degrees typically.

In addition to the above components, the pressure switch is used for protection and will not complete the heating circuit until there is sufficient water in the drum.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE REPLACING A PART IN ANY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE, YOU MUST ENSURE THAT THE APPLIANCE IS FIRST UNPLUGGED FROM THE MAINS.

    No Heat from Tumble Dryer:

If no heat is coming from your tumble dryer, check the element and thermostat with a multi-metre.

If a reduction of drying performance is found, this may be due to a fault with the thermostat, one of the elements in the tumble dryer has failed, or there’s a reduction in air flow through the dryer (check fan is working correctly).

If, on inspection, the cause of the fault is not immediately apparent most people will require the assistance of a trained professional.

The resistance of a thermostat this should read less then .1 of an ohm,and the resistance of a heating element should read between 25 and 50 ohms.
