How to Identify a Noisy Dishwasher Problem

Listed below are some of the most common reasons why a dishwasher may make excessive noise. This may be used to help advise you how to fix it.

    Noisy During Washing:

If the dishwasher makes a loud humming noise or squeals as the water is sprayed the fault is likely to be the wash pump. This can go noisy as the bearings fail or will make a loud hum if jammed. If jammed, check if any foreign object has got into the pump, and if it has, remove it. Failing to remove debris from the pump can lead to other faults occurring with the appliance.

Noisy (buzzing noise) a Short While into the Wash Cycle:

This may be the solenoid that opens the dispenser to release the detergent. Check if the noise occurs when the dispenser is opening, and if there is excessive noise, it may be necessary to replace the detergent dispenser.

    Noisy When Emptying:

This is usually something in the drain pump chamber and the most likely cause is a shard of glass from a glass breaking during a wash. To prevent this occurring always collect the pieces if a glass breaks and confirm all pieces are removed by "rebuilding" the glass.

To check this remove the pump and rotate the impeller, this is likely to rotate smoothly but will only stop in a number of positions due to the "poles" of the permanent magnet in the motor. This is normal.
