The fan oven element is responsible for heating the oven cavity in order to cook the food. In an electric cooker when the cooker knob is turned on, electricity flows to the element which causes it to heat up. Once the element reaches the desired temperature then the electricity flow switches on and off to maintain the temperature. This process is controlled by the thermostat.
Oven elements fail when the internal element filament burns out, this can cause the element to short circuit. There may be visible signs the element has blown such as a split, bulge, or blow hole on the element. Other signs of a failed element include; the oven not heating up, the oven blowing out cold air or bright spots during use.
The causes of element failure
There are a number of factors that can cause an oven element to blow. Damage due to the expansion and contraction of the element coils caused by the element constantly heating up and cooling down is a very common cause. While other causes of element failure can include overheating as a result of a failed thermostat or in some cases a build-up of grease causing the fan motor to run slowly.

I have never fixed an electrical appliance before and was going to buy a new cooker when my fan oven element stopped working. The element is fine - no problem with price, quality or delivery. I watched the videos before purchasing to ascertain whether fitting a new element was something I could reasonable achieve and it looked pretty simple, the trickiest thing seemed to be to not let the wires fall down the back when you took the old element out so I taped around the holes before removing the old element. The old element was really hard to remove and I had to use pliers, but I was careful to inspect where to place them so as not to pull the wires lose and gripped the flat metal female side of the connector that the element was attached to and had to pull quite hard. I found the confined working space difficult but I managed it - make sure you have a torch on hand as the power will be off! However, having finally got the fitting in and turned the mains back on, not even the light on the oven works whereas before the light and fan worked so I have obviously caused some damage along the way, I don't know how and am going to have to pay a professional to sort it out anyway..... the part I purchased was exactly as expected but I wouldn't have tried this unless it had been made to look so easy in the accompanying tutorials.
